Christmas is Histamas
Share
On the 12th day of Christmas, my diet gave to me - an overload of histamine…
‘HELP’! I hear you say – ‘please Karlene I don’t want to undo all the good work I have done for my gut because I feel sooo good – and yet it’s Christmas! I want to just have a good time… I want my cake and to eat it too’ (or maybe that should be pudding?)
I am hearing you loud and clear.
I assure you one day will not undo all your good work, however, everything has a limit, and everything has a sweet spot…
I declare that Christmas day is all about histamine! So, I’ve made up my own word!! Christmas is ‘Histamas’ and for some of my patients whom I’ve been working with all year, this could spell disaster!
Do you or anyone you know suffer from:
- Hay fever
- Hives
- Red and swollen eyes
- A rash on…. (fill in the blank)
- Sneezing
- Runny nose
- Itchy palate
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightening
- Blood pressure (BP) issues
- Racing heart
- Asthma
- Eczema flare-ups
Or perhaps you have a diagnosis of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, or Histamine Intolerance. This is a special interest area of mine because I have a lot of patients with amine sensitivity.
But fear not!
I have some great (and easy!) Histamas hacks to keep your diet drumming, your person peaceful, your liveliness leaping, your liver dancing (and the vigour in your vitality)!
8 Top Tips
Here is how to keep a safety net on Christmas:
1. Don’t Stress. Sounds easier said than done, but often the symptoms of stress make everything worse and:
-
- Make us feel overwhelmed
- Cause us to lose focus and potentially forget things (like taking your supplements)!
- Make us more irritable
- Cause sleeplessness
2. Simplify and delegate.
-
- Christmas doesn’t have to be a palaver (my favourite word) get help or delegate
- Share the load
- Say no if needed
3. Plan your day to have times of respite.
-
- Take a walk around the garden
- Pause for a moment on the swing by yourself
- Or hang out in the toilet – no one will disturb you there I promise (not even the kids)
4. Do the work on the days prior. Like a marathon runner loading up on carbs before a big event you may need to prepare by upping your:
-
- Vitamin C
- Magnesium
- Liver support
- NAC
- But also get some good sleep under your belt too, engage in extra fitness training (walking, cycling, gym, swimming) and
- Slide into some Cold therapy/ Hot Therapy/ Float tanks
5. On the big day – Christmas (Histamas) – start your morning with an antihistamine.
6. Plan to alkalise at least 4 times during the day.
7. Choose your big histamine items. Limit yourself to only 1 of these. Don’t stack them! It may be…
-
- A glass of champagne
- Ham
- The cheese platter
8. Alkalise some more – click here to read all about how to do this in my blog ‘Alkalise, alkalise, alkalise’
9. Don’t neglect your kidneys. They are filtering the day, so stay hydrated!
Finally…
Keep smiling!
Be grateful!
And have a wonderous day!
Stay safe, take care and I’ll see you in the New Year
